Print project: cultural identity
CSM BA Graphic Design, 2nd year, November 2008
The brief was produce a piece of print based on your cultural identity. Keen to avoid cultural stereotypes, I chose to make a piece discussing the common ground between different cultures, the things which are well established to the point where they are hardly noticed any more. I settled on a few key technologies which are taken for granted by everyone, at least everyone in the rich world, but which are nevertheless absolutely amazing: aeroplanes, telephones, credit cards and medicines.
My piece used a straightforward typesetting style to create an initial impression of banality, until the viewer realises that what looks like Helvetica is actually hand-drawn. I also wanted the booklets to spread the word about these technologies in a word-of-mouth fashion, not by making a flyer. I therefore made a booklet which could be unfolded to make a poster, and which could be simply photocopied to produce more copies. In that spirit, here's a PDF of 'Unremarkable: Aeroplanes'.
