Dementia

Illustrate any aspect of dementia, using photography
D&AD Student Awards 2008, Photography brief (view as PDF) CSM BA Graphic Design, 1st year, January 2008

The factory is a metaphor for the mind;
the gradual deterioration of the factory is a metaphor for dementia.

As the image sequence progresses, the factories depicted become gradually more empty and derelict. The fourth image contains a surreal and unexpected element, suggesting the sometimes-surreal nature of dementia.

During this work, one thing I discovered is that UK factories generally do not have many people in them! Since labour is cheaper in other countries, labour intensive work is no-longer done in the UK. I intend to make another sequence using found photography to better match my intentions...watch this space.
